The LANA wool coat is made from 100% merino wool, the same type of wool fabric - though somewhat thinner/"short-cropped" - as in the Ambassador and Selva wool coats. LANA is not quite as warm as these. The wool fibers in LANA are short, while they are longer in the Ambassador and Selva models. If you were to compare it to a sweater for humans, LANA would be a medium-thick sweater, while Ambassador would be a thick sweater.

The coat is cozy, comfortable, and functional. It is neither water- nor windproof. It is soft, allowing the dogs good mobility in this coat. Lovely for the dog to wear in the car when it is cold. Nice to wear before and after training, and before and after walks. Wool provides warmth even when wet. Wool is not static, and odors do not cling to wool coats the way they do to synthetic ones.

The Canelana LANA wool coat has the same smart fit as the other Canelana coats, Thermo and Ambassador, and it fits perfectly. It is ribbed in the front for better flexibility when putting it on and taking it off. There is an adjustable strap around the belly and tightening options both at the neck and at the back for the best possible fit for your dog.
The terrier model has an opening at the back for tails that stand straight up.

LANA is also available in a model tailored for dachshunds and other short-legged breeds – 6 sizes with back lengths of 30, 33, 36, 40, 45, and 50 cm.

NB! See the size guide in a separate tab. MEASURE THE DOG FROM SLIGHTLY IN FRONT OF THE SHOULDER BLADES TO THE BASE OF THE TAIL (IN FRONT OF THE TAIL WHEN YOU HOLD IT UP). Unlike other coat brands, the measurements provided for Canelana coats (e.g., Lana) represent the length in cm from the tightening at the neck to where we envision the base of the tail to be. The coat should lie well down and be tightened at the back, so the number of cm from the neck tightening to the end is therefore more than the cm measurement specified for the size. Example: Size M (45 cm). Full length is approx. 55 cm.

About the amazing properties of wool, and washing and maintenance of wool coats:

  • Wool is self-cleaning; wool contains lanolin, which is a waxy fat substance
  • Wool can absorb approximately 1/3 of its own mass in water vapor without feeling damp
  • Wool is biodegradable and sustainable

How to wash and care for wool dog coats?
The great advantage of wool is that it is in many ways self-cleaning and sustainable, but there are several things you should be aware of when washing and caring for it.

  • We recommend shaking it and airing it out in the fresh air for a couple of hours. Dirt usually does not penetrate the wool fibers but settles on the surface.

  • When washing, we recommend machine washing on a wool cycle at 30 degrees using a dedicated wool detergent.

  • Wool products should be washed separately for the best results.

  • Avoid hand washing if possible, as it can be difficult to regulate the temperature and remove soap and dirt residue compared to machine washing.

  • Spin-drying also helps the wool fabric dry faster and creates less favorable conditions for bacterial growth.

Why a wool coat?
Wool has three fantastic properties: It warms, insulates, and breathes. Keeping the dog's muscles warm both before and after walks and training can help prevent injuries and will help the dog recover faster. The dog's body therefore does not need to use unnecessary energy to maintain its body temperature.

Using a wool coat is excellent between heats in hunting trials! A wool coat can be useful for all dogs regardless of breed. Older dogs and dogs with injuries or arthritis, in particular, will often have poorer circulation and therefore get cold more easily. No one likes being cold! Wool should be the first choice for any dog on cold and damp days! Feel free to slide your hand under the coat to check if the dog is cold or warm.

The image below shows a dog wearing an AMBASSADOR wool coat, taken with a FLIR thermal imaging camera. (It shows - proves - that the dog has no heat loss where it is wearing the coat.)

Size Guide

Our blanket sizes are given as the dog's back length in centimeters. Measure your dog,
and choose the size that has the same back length. Then you are well on your way to a blanket that fits
as it should.

1.

Start between the shoulder blades.
Let the dog stand straight and still, and find the point in the middle of the shoulder blades.

2.

Start between the shoulder blades.
Let the dog stand straight and calm, and find the point between the shoulder blades.

3.

Measure along the back. Use a soft measuring tape and let it follow the shape of the back.

What do the goals mean?

  • The size, for example M 45 cm, is the dog's back length – measured between the two points shown in the illustration.

  • On the dog coat, this corresponds to the length from the drawstring at the neck to the center of the rear hem (regular model), or to the cutout for the tail (terrier model).

  • The total length of the coat, from the neck all the way to the back, is therefore longer than the size measurement. This allows it to cover the hips and extend down over the hindquarters.

  • The drawstring at the neck should sit at the very base of the neck, slightly in front of the shoulder blades. On the regular model, the base of the tail should fall approximately at the center of the rear hem.

Dachshund sizes

Some models are also available in specific dachshund sizes. They are adapted for dachshunds and other short-legged
dogs with long backs, so that the coat fits well at the front and does not hang too low on the sides.
The back length is measured in the same way as for other dogs.

How to put on the rug

1. Pull the rug over the head.
2. Tighten appropriately at the neck.
3. Fasten the section that goes under the chest and over the back.
4. Fasten the section that goes between the front legs and adjust the elastic if necessary.
5. Standard model: tighten at the back so the rug lies down over the thighs and hindquarters. The Terrier model has no rear tightening.
6. If the rug has leg straps, lift one hind leg at a time and thread it into the strap.
The leg straps help the rug stay in place at the back.

Standard model or terrier model?

The Terrier model is a good choice for many terriers, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog, and other dogs with a high tail carriage. If you are unsure, you can observe how your dog carries its tail when out for a walk.

Standard model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail low or straight back.

Rear shape: the coat goes all the way to the back and covers the base of the tail, the hips, and the thighs.

Rear adjustment: yes – the back of the coat can be tightened so that it sits down over the thighs and hindquarters.

Terrier model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail high, and dogs that do not like having anything resting over their tail.

Shape at the back: dogs that carry their tail high, and dogs that do not like having anything resting over their tail.

Tightening at the back: no – the terrier model has no tightening at the back.
