The material is thin, lightweight ripstop, similar to that found in lightweight down jackets. Loop for the pulling harness, with reflective detailing. Color code: L = black, M = orange, S = yellow. Flap with neoprene inside, providing males with some protection against frostbite. The neoprene in the flap prevents it from absorbing liquid.

Windy is a super-lightweight coat originally designed by Iditarod legend DeeDee Jonrowe for windy conditions or temperatures where a coat is barely necessary, but you still want the dogs to retain some heat. I use the coat on dogs with thin coats in temperatures from 0 down to -10°C, and on thick-coated dogs down to -15°C. The Windy is so light and compact that it really makes no difference in the sled. The coat sits very lightly on the dogs and does not compress the fur underneath. The fit is loose and allows for full freedom of movement. The coat is easily pulled over the head and fastened with a wide flap under the chest using soft Velcro on the side. They are quick to put on and take off during races. A small rectangular flap attached to the closing flap sits in front of the genitals to provide some protection for the males. Think of the Windy as a "windbreaker" for dogs. I used these coats in the 2020 Iditarod when I won the Rookie of the Year Award, and again in 2021 when I received the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award for the humane treatment of dogs. This award is presented by the race veterinarians to the musher who takes the best care of their team during the Iditarod race. During that race, with temperatures down to -40°C to -50°C, the dogs were of course wearing the insulated Racing coat, but to keep them going during the many days with warmer temperatures and light wind conditions, they wore the Windy model.
