Why choose a wool dog coat?

Wool has three amazing properties: it warms, insulates, and breathes. Keeping a dog's muscles warm before and after walks and training can prevent injuries and help with faster recovery. This way, the dog's body does not need to use unnecessary energy to maintain its body temperature.

A wool coat is excellent between heats in hunting trials and is useful for all dogs, regardless of breed. Older dogs, dogs with injuries or arthritis, which often have poorer circulation and get cold more easily, will especially benefit from a wool coat. Nobody likes being cold! Wool should be the first choice for any dog on cold winter days or damp days. Feel free to place your hand under the coat to check if the dog is cold or warm.

Even though the dog coat is not waterproof or windproof, it offers outstanding warmth and comfort. Wool is soft and gives the dog good mobility, making it ideal both in the car on cold days and before or after training and walks. It is naturally antistatic and resists odors better than synthetic materials, which makes wool coats hygienic and practical to use.

Unsure which size to choose?

See the size guide in its own tab.

You measure the dog from just in front of between the shoulder blades to the base of the tail (in front of the tail when you hold it up). Unlike other coat brands, the measurements provided for the Delta Dog Coat are the cm-length from the adjustment at the neck to where we consider the base of the tail to be. The coat should lie well down and be tightened at the back, so the number of centimeters from the adjustment at the neck to the end is more than the cm-measurement given for the size. This means that for size M (45 cm), the full length of the coat is approximately 55 cm.

How to wash and care for a wool dog coat?
The great advantage of wool is that it is in many ways self-cleaning and sustainable, but there are several things you should be aware of when washing and caring for it.

  • We recommend shaking it out and airing it outdoors in fresh air for a couple of hours. Dirt usually does not penetrate the wool fibers but settles on the surface.

  • When washing, we recommend machine washing using a wool cycle at 30 degrees with a dedicated wool detergent.

  • Wool products should be washed separately for the best results.

  • Preferably avoid hand washing, as it can be difficult to regulate the temperature and remove residues of soap and dirt compared to machine washing.

  • Spin-drying also helps the wool fabric dry faster and provides poorer conditions for bacterial growth.

Size Guide

Our blanket sizes are given as the dog's back length in centimeters. Measure your dog,
and choose the size that has the same back length. Then you are well on your way to a blanket that fits
as it should.

1.

Start between the shoulder blades.
Let the dog stand straight and still, and find the point in the middle of the shoulder blades.

2.

Start between the shoulder blades.
Let the dog stand straight and calm, and find the point between the shoulder blades.

3.

Measure along the back. Use a soft measuring tape and let it follow the shape of the back.

What do the goals mean?

  • The size, for example M 45 cm, is the dog's back length – measured between the two points shown in the illustration.

  • On the dog coat, this corresponds to the length from the drawstring at the neck to the center of the rear hem (regular model), or to the cutout for the tail (terrier model).

  • The total length of the coat, from the neck all the way to the back, is therefore longer than the size measurement. This allows it to cover the hips and extend down over the hindquarters.

  • The drawstring at the neck should sit at the very base of the neck, slightly in front of the shoulder blades. On the regular model, the base of the tail should fall approximately at the center of the rear hem.

Dachshund sizes

Some models are also available in specific dachshund sizes. They are adapted for dachshunds and other short-legged
dogs with long backs, so that the coat fits well at the front and does not hang too low on the sides.
The back length is measured in the same way as for other dogs.

How to put on the rug

1. Pull the rug over the head.
2. Tighten appropriately at the neck.
3. Fasten the section that goes under the chest and over the back.
4. Fasten the section that goes between the front legs and adjust the elastic if necessary.
5. Standard model: tighten at the back so the rug lies down over the thighs and hindquarters. The Terrier model has no rear tightening.
6. If the rug has leg straps, lift one hind leg at a time and thread it into the strap.
The leg straps help the rug stay in place at the back.

Standard model or terrier model?

The Terrier model is a good choice for many terriers, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog, and other dogs with a high tail carriage. If you are unsure, you can observe how your dog carries its tail when out for a walk.

Standard model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail low or straight back.

Rear shape: the coat goes all the way to the back and covers the base of the tail, the hips, and the thighs.

Rear adjustment: yes – the back of the coat can be tightened so that it sits down over the thighs and hindquarters.

Terrier model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail high, and dogs that do not like having anything resting over their tail.

Shape at the back: dogs that carry their tail high, and dogs that do not like having anything resting over their tail.

Tightening at the back: no – the terrier model has no tightening at the back.
