LANA wool blanket is made of 100% merino wool, the same type - but a somewhat thinner/"short-cropped" - wool fabric as in the Ambassadør and Selva wool blankets. LANA is not quite as warm as these. The wool fibers in LANA are short, whereas they are longer in the Ambassadør and Selva models. If one were to compare it to a human sweater, LANA would be a medium-thick sweater, while Ambassadør would be a thick sweater.

The blanket is snug, comfortable, and functional. It is neither waterproof nor windproof. It is soft, so the dogs have good mobility in this blanket. Wonderful for the dog to wear in the car when it is cold. Nice to wear before and after training, before and after walks. Wool provides warmth even when wet. Wool is not static, and odors do not settle in wool blankets the way they do in synthetic blankets.

Canelana Wool Blanket LANA has the same smart fit as the other Canelana blankets, Thermo and Ambassadør, and it fits perfectly. In the front, it is ribbed for better flexibility when putting it on and taking it off. There is an adjustable strap around the stomach and tightening at both the neck and the rear for the best possible fit for your dog.
The terrier model has an opening at the back for tails that stand straight up.

LANA is also available in a model adapted for dachshunds and other short-legged breeds – 6 sizes with back lengths of 30, 33, 36, 40, 45, and 50 cm.

NB! See the size guide in the separate tab. MEASURE THE DOG FROM SLIGHTLY IN FRONT OF THE SHOULDER BLADES TO THE BASE OF THE TAIL (IN FRONT OF THE TAIL WHEN YOU HOLD IT UP). Unlike other blanket brands, the measurements given for Canelana blankets (e.g., Lana) are the cm length from the neck tightening to where we estimate the base of the tail to be. The blanket should sit well down and be tightened at the back, so the number of cm from the neck tightening to the end is therefore more than the cm measurement stated for the size. Example size M (45 cm). Full length is approx. 55 cm.

How the blanket should sit at the back

About the amazing properties of wool, and washing and care of wool blankets:

  • Wool is self-cleaning; wool contains lanolin, which is a waxy fat substance
  • Wool can absorb approximately 1/3 of its own weight in water vapor without feeling damp
  • Wool is biodegradable and sustainable

In many cases, shaking and airing it out in fresh air for a couple of hours may be enough; wool is antibacterial and dirt usually does not penetrate into the wool fibers, but settles on the outside. If you want to wash it, we recommend machine washing on a wool program at 30 degrees with wool detergent. Machine programs are often gentler than hand washing because the temperature is precisely regulated. Furthermore, machine washing rinses out the soap residue and dirt, and spinning ensures that the wool fabric dries faster. Wet wool fabric can provide good conditions for bacterial growth through residual water, even though wool is antibacterial.

Why a wool blanket?
Wool has three fantastic properties: It warms, insulates, and breathes. Keeping your dog's muscles warm both before and after walks and training can act as injury prevention and will help the dog recover faster. The dog's body does not have to expend unnecessary energy to keep its body temperature up.

Using a wool blanket is excellent between rounds at hunting trials! A wool blanket can be useful for all dogs regardless of breed. Especially older dogs and dogs with injuries or arthrosis will often have poorer circulation and therefore feel the cold more easily. No one likes to be cold! Wool should be the first choice for any dog on cold and damp days! Feel free to slide your hand under the blanket to see if the dog is cold or warm.

The image below shows a dog wearing an AMBASSADØR wool blanket; it was taken with a FLIR thermal imaging camera. (It shows - proves - that the dog has no heat loss where it is wearing the blanket.)

How to wash and treat dog blankets made of wool?
The great advantage of wool is that it is in many ways self-cleaning and sustainable, but there are several things you should be aware of when washing and treating it.

  • We recommend shaking and airing it outside in fresh air for a couple of hours. Dirt usually does not penetrate the wool fibers but settles on the outside.

  • When washing, we recommend machine washing using a wool program at 30 degrees with a dedicated wool detergent.

  • Wool products should be washed separately for the best results.

  • Preferably avoid hand washing, as it can be difficult to regulate the temperature and remove soap residue and dirt compared to machine washing.

  • Spinning also ensures that the wool fabric dries faster and provides less favorable conditions for bacterial growth.

Size Guide

Our blanket sizes are given as the dog's back length in centimeters. Measure your dog,
and choose the size that has the same back length. Then you are well on your way to a blanket that fits
as it should.

1.

Start between the shoulder blades.
Let the dog stand straight and still, and find the point in the middle of the shoulder blades.

2.

Start between the shoulder blades.
Let the dog stand straight and calm, and find the point between the shoulder blades.

3.

Measure along the back. Use a soft measuring tape and let it follow the shape of the back.

What do the goals mean?

  • The size, for example M 45 cm, is the dog's back length – measured between the two points shown in the illustration.

  • On the dog coat, this corresponds to the length from the drawstring at the neck to the center of the rear hem (regular model), or to the cutout for the tail (terrier model).

  • The total length of the coat, from the neck all the way to the back, is therefore longer than the size measurement. This allows it to cover the hips and extend down over the hindquarters.

  • The drawstring at the neck should sit at the very base of the neck, slightly in front of the shoulder blades. On the regular model, the base of the tail should fall approximately at the center of the rear hem.

Dachshund sizes

Some models are also available in specific dachshund sizes. They are adapted for dachshunds and other short-legged
dogs with long backs, so that the coat fits well at the front and does not hang too low on the sides.
The back length is measured in the same way as for other dogs.

How to put on the rug

1. Pull the rug over the head.
2. Tighten appropriately at the neck.
3. Fasten the section that goes under the chest and over the back.
4. Fasten the section that goes between the front legs and adjust the elastic if necessary.
5. Standard model: tighten at the back so the rug lies down over the thighs and hindquarters. The Terrier model has no rear tightening.
6. If the rug has leg straps, lift one hind leg at a time and thread it into the strap.
The leg straps help the rug stay in place at the back.

Standard model or terrier model?

The Terrier model is a good choice for many terriers, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog, and other dogs with a high tail carriage. If you are unsure, you can observe how your dog carries its tail when out for a walk.

Standard model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail low or straight back.

Rear shape: the coat goes all the way to the back and covers the base of the tail, the hips, and the thighs.

Rear adjustment: yes – the back of the coat can be tightened so that it sits down over the thighs and hindquarters.

Terrier model

Suitable for: dogs that carry their tail high, and dogs that do not like having anything resting over their tail.

Shape at the back: dogs that carry their tail high, and dogs that do not like having anything resting over their tail.

Tightening at the back: no – the terrier model has no tightening at the back.
