VELA - Canelana dog blanket in 100% wool

100% thick merino wool on the top side, 100% polyester fabric impregnated with latex glue on the underside, 100% polyurethane - laminating (adhesive) foam in the middle. The width is 1.50 m. A wool dog blanket is better than fleece because:

• Wool insulates, warms, and breathes.
• Wool stays warm even when wet.
• Wool is not static; therefore, it does not attract dust particles, and the dog's fur does not become "electrified".
• Wool has properties that prevent dirt from penetrating easily, and wool becomes clean at just 30 degrees.
• Dogs prefer wool if they can choose for themselves.

TIPS FOR USING CANELANA WOOL DOG BLANKETS IN WHELPING BOXES

Monika had her first litter in 2007 and has had 13 litters in total, 3 litters on Canelana wool.

Puppies should lie on a surface that provides warmth even when wet, and that is where wool is worth its weight in gold. In addition, the surface should provide good grip for the puppies when they move, and it should lie firmly/heavily on the floor so the dam cannot dig over the puppies. To avoid the dam lying on the puppies, it should not be so warm that the puppies lie spread out. The puppies should huddle together when the mother is out of the box.

The room temperature at my place has been around 19 degrees in a draft-free location. Since I started using wool in the box, the dams have been much calmer, there has been less digging, and no mastitis. I have also not experienced losing any puppies due to a restless dam.

Many keep a puppy room too warm, and some even use a heat lamp. It is recommended to have about 22 degrees and no drafts, but my experience is that this is often too warm for dams with fur. A heat lamp can increase the chance of mastitis because heat stimulates increased milk production.

I put a layer of newspaper at the bottom, puppy pads, and then the wool. The first few days, when the dam is bleeding quite a bit, I can place bedding on top of the wool to avoid too much mess. I change the wool blanket 1-2 times a week for the first 3 weeks and wash the blanket on the wool cycle.
